Chapter Thirteen

Abigail poured coffee into two mugs and set them on the kitchen table. Nearby, steam billowed from two bowls filled with oatmeal.

Grandma placed a creamer of whole milk, a saucer of blueberries, and another saucer of blueberry jam between the mugs. “I think that’s it. Shall we?”

“Yes, please,” Abigail said. She helped Grandma into her chair before taking her own seat. “I woke up so hungry this morning.”

“Eat up then. You’re going to need it today.”

“What does that mean?”

Grandma tilted her head. “It’s just a feeling I have. Today is going to be a big day.”

With a shrug, Abigail poured milk into her steaming oatmeal and mixed them together. Then she plopped a couple of heaping spoons of jam and sprinkled in a handful of blueberries. Lastly, she stirred the jam, so that the purple-blue confection swirled in pretty wisps throughout the oatmeal.

She spooned a big bite into her mouth and sighed with happiness. “I never had real oatmeal until I had it with you, Grandma.”

“Well, thank you, dear.”

They enjoyed their oatmeal and coffee until it was time to get to work. Grandma offered to do the dishes so Abigail could open up the store.

When she went to unlock the door, Abigail was surprised to see James standing on the porch. His back was to the door, and he was looking over the parking lot as if it were a vast ocean rather than gravel.

“James?”

He turned and grinned. “Cupcake. Are you ready?”

“Ready for what?”

“For Lovers’ Point.”

“What?”

James stared at her, his brows furrowing. Then his brown eyes sparked, and the furrows eased away. “She didn’t tell you, did she?”

“Who? What?” Abigail snapped her mouth closed as understanding dawned. “Grandma.”

“She called me last night saying you wanted a tour of Lovers’ Point for the investigation.”

“She and I were supposed to go together.”

James nodded. “She mentioned that. Then she said she’d remembered she was ancient and that it would be idiotic for her to climb over those rocks, and that you two had decided I was a good substitute.”

“She said she was ancient?”

James nodded again. “I guess I should have wondered why you didn’t just text me.”

I guess I know what caused that so-called feeling she had, Abigail thought.

“I can leave,” James offered.

“No, Grandma’s right. I was silly to even think we’d go down there together.” Abigail shot a look over her shoulder to see if her grandmother was within hearing distance. She wasn’t. “Let me grab my coat. Come in, of course.”

“That’s okay. I was just starting to feel comfortable out in this cold.”

Abigail dashed back to the kitchen where she found Grandma chuckling over the dishes. She gave the woman a quick hug. “I’ll try to find out everything I can, Grandma.”

“I’m sure you will, dear. Now bundle up and be very careful.”

“I will.” Abigail ran upstairs and switched some of her lighter layers for heavier ones. Then she grabbed her warmest coat and trotted back downstairs.

When she made it to the front porch, she was surprised once again. James was no longer alone.
